When an artist becomes a scientist

At school in England, Tom Learner had to choose between art and science; now, as head of science at the Getty Conservation Institute, there’s no need.

Jewelry that makes the past present

For the well-to-do 20-something traveling across Europe in the 19th century, a trip to Rome wasn’t complete without a stop at the Castellani jewelry shop. Castellani was a place to gather and be seen, and a guest book logged a visit the way a shared selfie might today.

What happens to art when the weather gets hot?

With heat waves becoming more common, you might wonder: what would happen if works of art were exposed to those harsh conditions? While researching the Johnson Publishing Company archive (JPCA), Alex Jones, curatorial research assistant at the Getty Research Institute, was stunned to discover photos of Black drag queens from the 1940s through '60s.

As he started digging in to the JPCA (a one-of-a-kind collection of photographic, print, and ephemeral materials that constituted Ebony, Jet, and other major publications on African American life and culture), the surprises kept coming. "I was taken aback by the scale of queer visibility and pride that the JPCA photographs put into high relief," Jones writes.
